You might land at Brisbane Airport destination: Gold Coast. Or maybe you've headed for a long day's journey into night from Sydney Airport or you're cruising with a car hire at Melbourne airport. There's over 50 airport car hire locations in Australia to choose from so you won't be walking home.
Car hire in Australia is largely dominated by 5 main rental companies: Hertz rentals, Europcar, Avis, Budget cars and Thrifty. These 5 car rental agencies have roughly 900 depots in Australia that provide rentals to every state and territory.
Because most of Australia's airports are located well outside of their respective cities, arranging for an airport car rental car can save you a significant amount of money on both of your arrival and return trips. In fact, some cabs and shuttle services can run anywhere from $40-50 or more depending on your arrival city.
If the distance is negligible, however, you can save money at certain airports by reserving your car hire for pick-up at a downtown car rental depot and returning it to the airport at the conclusion of your trip. Split-end reservations such as these can allow you to bypass the airport surcharge that is often levied onto car rentals.
Whether at the airport or in the central business district, one thing is for certain: business travellers and leisure travellers alike will save both time and money during their stay by expensing a car rental. Rentals afford a mobility and freedom that you cannot find with any other form of transportation.
CarRental.com.au compares cheap car hire, campervan hire and motorhome hire from all the major rental companies including Cheapa, Maui, Britz, Jucy, Apollo, Europcar, Avis, Budget, Thrifty, Hertz & cars and campers from under $50 per day from operators like Britz & Backpacker Cars & Campervans. The price and campervans are provided to us by each supplier, so you can save a lot of time by searching in one place.
In addition we offer great discounts and deals, such as relocations from $1 a day. These discounts on Australia car hire tend to change from month to month and they will get you a saving that is not available if you make a reservation directly with with Thrifty.com.au, Hertz.com.au, Avis.com.au, Apollo.com.au, Jucy.com.au, Backpacker.com.au & the rest.
To search for Australia car hire just add your departure dates and return dates in the form. In the second step you will be able to select a vehicle. All types of vehicles are on offer including 2 bed campers, campers for families and larger luxury campers plus rental cars. The search results will show cars, campervans and motorhomes from several rental companies.
Hiring a car is probably the best way to see what Australia has to offer. There are vast areas of natural beauty and idyllic scenery to see, such as the Great Barrier Reef and Ayres Rock. You have the opportunity to learn about aboriginal life, and discover the very diverse cultures and cuisines that are available from the variety of Australian towns and cities.Possibly the best way to get around Australia is to arrange your car hire directly from the airport, which of course will allow easy transfer to your hotel. At CarRental.com.au you have the ability to enter your travel details into our convenient booking form below, and this should include information such as your pickup and drop-off locations. We have long-standing partnerships with all of the major car hire companies in Australia, which allows us to offer exclusive discount coupons that you are unlikely to find anywhere else. This is the ideal way to save money on your next trip to Australia.
We have teamed up with the five main rental companies: Hertz rentals, Europcar, Avis, Budget cars and Thrifty. Currently, up to 90 airports in Australia are serviced by car rental depots from these five car rental agencies. Hiring a car directly from the airport is likely to save you a significant sum of money. You can expect to pay anywhere from $40-$50, each way, for cabs and shuttle services to and from your destination, and therefore you can start saving money from the second you arrive in Australia by hiring a car from the airport.
With that said, you should keep in mind that cars hired at airports will typically incur an airport surcharge or tax. This is a charge levied by the car rental companies, and unfortunately this may increase the price of your car hire by up to 22%. The surcharge is typically included within the price that you will be quoted. However, you are able to avoid this surcharge by simply renting your car from a non-airport location, although this will involve you having to arrange your own transportation to the car hire office.
Whether you decide to book your car hire from the airport or a downtown car rental depot, you can guarantee that this is the perfect way to travel around Australia. There is so much to see and a vast amount of the area to cover, and therefore hiring a car can make your Australian experience one to remember.
Airport car hire will get you around the traps to see the best of the country. The masses of natural beauty and scenery include but are not limited to the Outback and the Reef. In the Outback you can wander the Oodnadatta Track for a few days and not see a soul, but if you like a crowd then clamber up Uluru to see the vast view of the Red Centre, but the power of the place will amaze you. Learning about the Aboriginal culture and ways of life will interest you.
If you can drive straight from Alice Springs Airport the round trip is about 500 km's. You will likely be charged excess kilometer fees of about $125 but it is an interesting if remote drive. Alternatively you can arrive at Ayers Rock Airport.
If you are looking to make a trip like that, enter your details into the form below and you will be able to compare the all Airport car hire prices from all our rental companies. Our historical relationships with the rental companies means that special discounts are on offer for our users. Just show them upon pickup and the discount will be applied.
The top 5 rental companies in Australia are present at over 100 Australian airports. Each day something like 10,000 rental cars are taken from airport depots. You may not be aware that rental companies charge excessive airport car hire fees. These fees are up to 22% of the cost of the rental vehicle. One way to avoid them and to make ensure that you get cheap car rental is to arrange a pickup from the city or elsewhere, but drop off at the airport. The price will be considerably cheaper.
Airport hire cars (the fancy ones in black) are likely to charge $50 for a one way trip from the major airports, moreso for Melbourne and Brisbane than Sydney where the airport car hire depots are quite a distance from the CBD. Rental cars from rental companies however are more likely to be under $50 per day.

We're happy to welcome RentalCover.com as our specialist provider of rental vehicle cover. RentalCover.com is an authorised distributor of insurance policies for the car and motorhome rental industry. It sells thousands of policies per day to car renters in over 50 countries. When you make a booking be sure to include rental cover and they will issue you with a policy that covers repairs and damage costs. You just need to pay for the damage then make a claim to your RentalCover.com insurer.
We recently integrated RentalCover.com into our booking engine. RentalCover.com is an Aussie-owned company that provides rental vehicle excess cover for car and motorhome renters globally. RentalCover.com is an alternative to the excess reduction(aka excess waiver or damage liability waiver) that is offered by rental companies at the pickup depot.
RentalCover.com is typically about 50% cheaper than the supplier's excess reduction, plus there are no exclusions (from their excess reduction policies rental companies usually exclude repair costs for windscreen, tyres, roof, underbody and single vehicle accident damage, so those costs are payable in full). The claim fees (aka "excess" that you would be reducing from the supplier) payable in the event of an accident are much less with RentalCover.com too.
Please choose the correct location below:
Baby/child/booster seats and GPS are options on the third (and final) step of the booking process. If available we add the price to the booking amount. If it is not available the price shown on our site will not be updated. As a guide though, expect to pay $10 per day per item. Some suppliers cap the fee at $100 per item too. Beyond that though you are advised to bring your own. Extras are also subject to availability.
Yes. Please do not cancel your car booking dircetly with the rental company. Just sign in and you can cancel your car booking and RentalCover.com policy any time up to and including the commencement date. Cancellation terms for cars are outlined in our Booking Terms and RentalCover.com policies can be cancelled up to the time of pickup.

To change pickup or dropoff times by +60 minutes or change locations or car choice, create a new car booking and cancel the old one. If you are not changing dates, you do not need to cancel, modify or repurchase a RentalCover.com policy because RentalCover.com policies are valid for the full day of pickup and the full day of dropoff. If you are changing dates you should purchase a new RentalCover.com policy and cancel the old one. Refunds are issued automatically.
Note that RentalCover.com policies are valid for any car regardless of the site used to book the car and regardless of the rental company.
More questions about RentalCover.com.
There are three options: (1) Our rental vehicle coverage partner, RentalCover.com covers rental vehicles for 50% less than the price paid for the rental company's excess reduction. Excess reduction from the rental companies costs more (at least double), provides less coverage (excludes windscreen damage, tyres, single vehicle accidents, driving at night, roof and underbody damage & more) and has higher claim fees (usually you still have to pay the rental company $300-$1000). With RentalCover.com, in the event of an accident you would pay the supplier and claim the full amount from your insurer. Your other options are: (2) Drive without any rental cover, in which case you potential liability is $3,000-$5,000 depending on the vehicle, and risk that the repair charges are grossly inflated so that you pay more than the true repair cost. (3) Take the supplier's excess reduction: see above.

The prices we show are either (a) the same as the supplier's website, or (b) cheaper than their website. This means we are able to offer a "best price guarantee" on any vehicle from a given supplier. We work closely with various travel agents and travel technology companies to sift through millions of vehicle alternatives, then we display the cheapest one to you from hundreds of alternatives. You can also click the "compare prices" link on our search results to see most of the other results.
We also promote up to $100 off coupons. You can see those on the search results page. After you book you can access the codes and then attach the code to your booking by contacting the supplier. The coupons are issued by the suppliers and are not applicable for 100% of bookings, but most are insured!
Lastly, we offer alternative insurance from RentalCover.com, a site that provides insurance for vehicle renters. The price is usually 50% or less than the cost that you will pay for insurance at the rental desk! Just add it to your booking by clicking the "Include" button once you've chosen your car.
You pay the car rental company on collecting your vehicle. We do not collect payment or credit card details, instead we automatically submit your details to the car rental company when you make a booking using our easy 3 step process.
Prices we display are direct from our partner websites. We do not charge fees for this service, instead we receive a small booking commission from the suppliers. The full fee breakdown is shown on the booking page (step 3). There are no hidden fees, though the suppliers may charge credit card fees at the rental desk. One major fee is the "airport surcharge" or "premium location fee" which adds up to 25% (at major metro airports) to your total cost (note that it will be added to the excess reduction cost if you take that from the supplier rather than our insurance partner RentalCover.com . You can avoid these by picking up at a nearby location (you would be taken to the rental desk by the supplier via "free shuttle" or "meet or greet"). Note also that airport dropoffs don't incur surcharges, just pickups.
Yes you will get all the points that you would earn by booking directly with Thrifty, Europcar and Hertz. We show the earnable (is that a word?) points on step 2. Add your frequent flyer number into the Travel Profile after you complete your booking.
For the car rental booking: You do not need to change anything. At the rental desk the intended drivers will be required to sign the rental agreement.
For RentalCover.com policies: Additional drivers who are on the rental agreement with you are covered free of charge. Policies are issued under the name shown in your Account, i.e. that name must be on the rental agreement in order to be insured by RentalCover.com. That name can be changed and the policy will be updated; active RentalCover.com policies (i.e. policies that commence from today onwards) will be updated automatically. Policies that started yesterday or prior cannot be updated. There may be a small price if the age of the new RentalCover.com policy holder requires that a different policy be issued.
To add another driver to the policy: Additional drivers who are on the rental agreement with you are covered free of charge. However as described above, the policy holder listed in your account needs to be on the agreement. You can change the policy holder up to and including on the day of commencement.

Deposit amounts are usually between £/$/€500 to £/$/€900 but can go up to £/$/€1200 depending on the destination and vehicle type. Make sure your credit card limit allows you to pay the deposit plus any other expenses you have planned for your trip.
You will usually need a credit card for this and the rental company will either deduct or place a hold on your funds. If there is no damage to the car, the hold will be released or a refund will be issued after drop off. Please note that it can take a few days for the money to get back into your account.
If the car is damaged the rental company may deduct the security deposit and any other amounts from your card.
For more specific questions about your car rental, including queries about refunds of your deposit, please contact our partner you booked through.
Similarly, if your customer damages their rental vehicle and the rental company provides them with a replacement, our insurance will automatically cover it, as long as the car type and policy holder details remain the same.
Updating or cancelling their vehicle booking will automatically influence their insurance booking.
Encourage your customers to follow the tips below to avoid the hard sell at the rental desk and have a safe, stress-free trip:
1. Be reassured that their RentalCover.com policy is valid
If they are told by the rental company that they “don’t recognise” their RentalCover.com policy, they shouldn't worry: They don’t need to! Our policies are an independent alternative to the rental company’s waivers and they are valid worldwide. They have no hidden exclusions and are generally 50% cheaper than the rental company’s waivers.
2. Prepare their documents
Encourage your customers to have all required documents ready for their check-in and take a look at their country’s Rental Guide so they know what to expect at the rental desk.
3. Be confident
They have chosen to be insured by a fully underwritten, global distributor of insurance products with a proven track record of processing claims lightning fast - on average within three business days. RentalCover.com have been doing this since 2014 and have "excellent" ratings on consumer review website, TrustPilot.com.
