Located way out of the city, Melbourne airport is home to all major car rental outlets and a great place to pick up a hire car. All the leading companies have offices on the ground floor and short term car park, as well as service desks inside the domestic terminal. To get to the city in a cab will take you about half an hour, and cost around $50 AUD. The only other option is to get a bus, which costs about $20 per person and will drop you in the CBD. Accommodation near the airport is varied in price and standard. However, if you don't fancy staying that close, the drive to the Melbourne CBD is an interesting one, taking you through footy-mad Essendon, birthplace of the Bombers AFL club and Steve Irwin the Crocodile Hunter, as well as Flemington, home of Australia's oldest metropolitan racecourse for those who enjoy a punt!
