Darwin Airport is the gateway to the Northern Territory and from here you can pick up your cheap hire car without any fuss - the car rental service desks are located at the Arrivals Hall near baggage collection on the ground floor. The airport is about 15 minutes away from downtown Darwin, and in a cab the journey will set you back upwards of $25 AUD and there is a shuttle that costs $12 per person one way. While Darwin is a relatively small city there is a lot to do here. You can pick up a hire car in Darwin CBD and then visit the beautiful harbour or go fishing for Barramundi and check out local art at the Parap gallery district. The NT itself is full of delights awaiting the intrepid tourist and with a rental car it is that much easier to experience some of Australia's ancient culture and wildlife in Kakadu National Park or head to Katherine for some indulgence or some excellent fishing with a 4WD. Of course Uluru/Ayers Rock, perhaps Australia's most famous natural landmark, is in the Northern Territory too, a few days worth of driving from the Darwin CBD, with the Olgas lying in wait just beyond the sandstone colossus.
