Fraser Island remains one of the most unique driving experiences that can be found in Australia, its protected array of wildlife and wilderness making it the perfect place to rent a 4WD and get amongst it, whether on a guided tour or on your own.

The closest landmark to Fraser Island is Brisbane Airport, from where you can pick up a one way rental (saving money on fees), get on the Bruce Highway and head north for about 6 hours, switch to a 4WD and hit the diverse beach and forest tracks awaiting you on Fraser Island. Another popular way to get there is from the CBD of Brisbane itself, where many of the leading rental companies have outlets.
Home to Aboriginal tribes such as the Butchulla for over 5,500 years, the island is rich in cultural history and historic landmarks. Furthermore, with over 230 species of bird, 25 species of mammal (including dingoes!) and more than 50 shipwrecked vessels calling Fraser Island home, this unique landscape's hidden secrets and their keepers are waiting to be discovered in places only accessible by 4WD.
The region has fairly stringent restrictions to preserve the pristine condition of the many beaches, lakes and forests, asking that you abide by the "Take only photographs and memories, leave only foot prints" code. Campsites have already been cleared for use by travellers; soaps and detergents etc. are asked to be kept out of the freshwater lakes and streams; and rubbish bins are provided all along the 4WD tracks.
For more information, check out the 4WD Australia guide which goes into the restrictions in more detail.
