Bayswater Car Rentals, a company located in Kings Cross, is charging that the Sydney Council is harming car rental businesses within the city due to an unfair advantage enjoyed by its car-share scheme. Likewise, residents have taken to voicing their complaints over the lack of parking spaces that has resulted from the Council's programme.

The goal of the Sydney Council car share programme is to triple car share membership by the year 2016, a figure that would reach 15,000 people, or 10% of all households. One of the biggest claims made by the Council is that their scheme would free up over 1,000 parking spots as well as cut down on traffic congestion.
Approximately 190 dedicated on-street spaces have already been installed for the car share programme. Each space has been estimated to cost roughly $800 each. The spaces are reserved for the three private car rental agencies involved in the enterprise: GoGet, Charter Drive, and Flexicar. GoGet holds around 80% of the programmes cars and members.
Arnold Kluck, the general manager for Bayswater Car Rentals, claims that such an arrangement is tantamount to choosing favourites whilst subsidising the competition of other car share companies.
