A Melbourne man recently won a battle to stave off an $8,000 car rental fee from Europcar. Paul Douglas-Denton, 60, was hit with the bill shortly after the car that he was renting for a trip between Darwin and Alice Springs was broken into whilst in Katherine over the summer.

The rental car that Mr. Douglas-Denton was using had its windows smashed, mirrors broken off, and its panels damaged. In addition to the tow that returned him to Darwin, Mr. Douglas-Denton was slapped with a bill from Europcar to the tune of $8,000. The final tally included the towing expense, fines for the estimated repair costs, excess mileage, and excess petrol.
Upon protesting his situation to Europcar, the car rental company informed Mr. Douglas-Denton that their rental contracts reserved them the right to charge him accordingly. However, Gary Clements, the Northern Territory Consumer Affairs Commissioner, persuaded Europcar to drop the charge, insisting that they were misinterpreting the renter agreement.
